Downside School, new dormitory

A new state-of-the-art dormitory within the historic heart of one of England's leading Catholic schools. Strong appeal to prospective parents and robustness against the elements (not least against the boys themselves!) were key requirements.

The building is thoroughly modern in design. Stainless steel, chosen for the roof covering, and terracotta rain-screen tiles for the wall cladding with pressed aluminium flashings, were all carefully handled to marry with the existing grade II* listed surroundings.

The building won a commendation in the regional RIBA Town & Country Design Awards 2003 and in the regional Federation of Master Builders Awards 2004.
