Glastonbury Abbey, visitor centre and museum

Previously visitors passed through a turnstile next to a small ticket seller's hut, not a particularly encouraging welcome to one of Somerset's most historic sites.

The new building incorporates a museum and shop on a site exceedingly difficult to plan. The old chapel of St Patrick had to be accommodated (the bellcote can be seen in the photograph) and foundations are carried on piles to avoid archaeological remains.
