Downside Abbey

Following the 2010 Quinquennial Inspection, which provided an opportunity for close study of the condition of the fabric, and a small enabling grant from The Pilgrim Trust to undertake specialist investigation into the condition of stonemasonry the first phase of a major repair programme has been started; the recovering of the copper roofs by Ellis & Co of Shepton Mallet. The scaffolding necessary to access the Lady Chapel roof is being utilised to attend to stone and window repairs by teh specialists Sally Strachey Historic Conservation and John Yeo Stained Glass.

Further phases, dependant on fund raising, will attend to shortcommings in the now antiquated heating and electrical installations, to further roof repairs and in time to remedial work inside the Abbey where cleaning and making good horribly disfgured stone valuted ceilings is necessary.
