Weston-Super-Mare, Locking Castle, new church and community hall

A new church and hall were required to be the spiritual and physical focus of the commercial centre of Locking Castle: one of the largest housing developments in the south-west.

The planning authority required a prominent structure, but the client wanted a modest and economic meeting place, so cost control was crucial. Part of the budget was spent on a glass facade, to enable the building to be both open and welcoming.

The roof is steeply pitched and economically covered with pre-insulated metal sheeting over a light steel frame, walls are plain brickwork, and the whole exterior is designed to be maintenance-free.
